Congress continues to fail in its duty to check the runaway federal courts. It has been a number of years since any congressman or senator has proposed any legislation which would end the practice of federal courts issuing orders requiring unconstitutional practices based on race and ethnic origin.
It is especially frustrating when a congressman or senator ignores constituent letters regarding the matter or forwards constituent letters to the Justice Department or the Department of Education.
It is even more frustrating when a senator such as Ohio's George Voinovich who promised action when campaigning for office chooses to ignore the problem after he is elected.
A letter received by the NANS Communications Office from Senator Voinovich in response to a letter regarding court limiting legislation borders on the unbelievable.Although the letter obviously was written by an aide, it carried the Senator's signature. (Incidentally four months had passed before we received the response.)
"The second paragraph of the letter shows an absolute total ignorance of the history of so-called "desegregation' orders by federal courts. Whoever wrote it actually said:
"....these are decisions that would be made by the Taft administration and the General Assembly in Columbus, not by your federal legislators in Washington.
Then, making matters worse, in the next paragraph the writer launched into a discussion of a bill Voinovich has proposed dealing with racial profiling. What in heaven's name did the writer think that racial profiling had to do with the subject we wrote to Voinovich about?
We responded to Voinovich saying that we assumed he had not seen the ridiculous 'answer' sent to us or surely he would never have let it be mailed.
We sent a copy of our original letter, a copy of the ridiculous "answer" and a copy of our reply to his DC office and to each of his state offices in hopes that at least one of his offices might bring the matter to his attention.
We are still waiting for Senator Voinovich to respond.
Perhaps we should at least give Mr. Voinovich credit for sending something as a response. That is more than constituents often get from other senators and congressmen regarding this issue.
