He is passionate about helping individuals with complex chronic pain regain function and improve their quality of life through thoughtful patient selection, advanced therapies, and long-term care strategies. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Freas is dedicated to mentoring future pain medicine leaders and advancing the field through education, advocacy, and policy initiatives. His interest in neuromodulation began during his Pain Medicine fellowship, where he witnessed the profound impact of these therapies for patients whose pain had not responded to conventional treatments.
A NANS member since 2017, Dr. Freas demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing neuromodulation through his service on the Advocacy and Policy Committee. His leadership experience in medicine, healthcare policy, and reimbursement advocacy reflects a dedication to improving patient access to innovative therapies and supporting the continued growth of the specialty.
Areas of expertise:
Interventional pain medicine and neuromodulation, including spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation. Board-certified in Pain Medicine and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation with more than 20 years of clinical experience. Former Chairman of the State of Maryland Board of Medicine. Active in national reimbursement policy as RUC Advisor for the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS) and in state-level formulary and regulatory work.
Why I enjoy what I do:
I enjoy restoring function and quality of life for patients living with complex chronic pain. Combining advanced interventional techniques with careful patient selection and long-term management allows me to make a tangible difference in people’s daily lives. I also find deep satisfaction in helping develop the next generation of Pain Medicine physician leaders while continuing to shape the field through clinical practice, education, and policy work.
How I became interested in neuromodulation:
During my Pain Medicine fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center, I was introduced to neuromodulation as a powerful option for patients who had exhausted conventional therapies. Seeing the impact of spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation on refractory pain solidified my commitment to this field and has remained a core focus of my practice and leadership work ever since.
I am a member of NANS because:
I am a member of NANS because it is the leading organization advancing the science, education, and clinical application of neuromodulation. The opportunity to contribute to national policy discussions (including as RUC Advisor representing NANS) and to stay connected with colleagues who share a commitment to evidence-based innovation makes membership invaluable.
