About
Can (John) Sarica, MD, PhD, is a neurosurgeon-scientist specializing in movement disorders, neuro-oncology, and therapeutic focused ultrasound. He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, working with Dr. Michael Fox.
Dr. Sarica received his medical degree from Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine and completed his neurosurgery residency at Marmara University, both in Istanbul, Türkiye. He then completed a two-year fellowship in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto as a Michael and Amira Dan Fellow, followed by a PhD under the co-supervision of Drs. Andres Lozano and Robert Chen.
His research spans the use of focused ultrasound for both neuromodulation and ablation in movement disorders. His PhD work involved human studies combining focused ultrasound with intracranial electrophysiology in patients with Parkinson’s disease, with studies published in Science Translational Medicine and Nature Communications. He also led one of the first clinical trials of bilateral focused ultrasound ablation for tremor and completed a first-in-human study of focused ultrasound ablation-enhanced liquid biopsy in patients with brain tumors, which is being prepared for submission. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications across functional neurosurgery and neuromodulation.
